On the evening 0f Nov.25 2016, the second lecture of City U Education Forum was initiated smoothly at T111 of Taipa campus. Dr. Li Shuying, the academic registrar of City University of Macau as well as the dean of Faculty of Education, well prepared a lecture named Re-searching for life experience: Scientific research methods in education studies from the perspective of humanities. This lecture was hosted by FED programme coordinator Dr. ShaoYanju. Over 30 master and doctoral students from different faculties were attracted to join.

At the beginning of this lecture, Dr. Li Shuying shared his own life experience with all the participants: his education background, academic research fields, family and life experience. This sharing let the students know more about Dr. Li. He started his lecture from analyzing the concept of science. Through comparing difference cases, Dr. Li illustrated different approaches to quantitative research and qualitative research methodology. Dr. Li shared his research experiences from daily life especially the interaction with his children, to introduce how to discover research questions from daily life and how to use qualitative research methods to solve problems in humanity science. Then, through introducing the book Children’s Secrets: Secrets, Privacy, and Recognition of the Self, Dr. Li analyzed the meaning of secrets and its significant inspirations for education studies. In the whole lecture, students applaud many times unconsciously, when they felt moved by the lecture content.

Finally, Dr. Li specially left a Q&A session for students to communicate and ask questions. Several students shared their comments and raised their own questions. They had a heated discussion with Dr. Li, about various topics, including research methods in education studies, the theoretical framework of qualitative research, how to carry out exploratory curiosity, how to conduct fieldwork, how to raise appropriate research questions, and the different approaches to quantitative and qualitative research methods. Finally, all the participated students took a group photo with Dr. Li as a happy ending. In addition, if anyone who miss this lecture, please do not worry.
