Classroom Learning Study and Teachers’ Professional Development

In the afternoon of December 13, the third lecture of City U Education Forum, Classroom Learning Research and Teachers’ Professional Development was successfully held. Dr. Ko Po Yuk, Associate Professor of Department of Curriculum and Instruction and Director of the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching of Education, from the Education University of Hong Kong, elaborated a wonderful lecture focusing on the theme of teachers’ professional development at City University of Macau. Many postgraduate students from different faculties were attracted to join this seminar.

 

At the beginning, Dr. Ko introduced the education reform in Hong Kong since 2000 as the research background and shared the process of teachers' professional development from a student teacher to an excellent teacher. After comparatively briefing the international and cross-regional classroom research literature, Dr. Ko especially sharing the theoretical and practical models of the classroom learning research in Hong Kong. Through sharing a series of video cases, Dr. Ko interpreted the basic theories of classroom learning research in a considerate way and detailed how to find the difficult points in the teaching process, especially from the students’ perspective, and how to carry out an action research. Finally, Dr. Ko discussed with the participated students about the inspiration of classroom learning research impacting on the teachers’ professional development.

 

Finally, Dr. Ko specially reserved a Q&A session for comments and remarks. Several students raised their questions, such as whether the size of teaching class matters, how to deal with the heavy workload of teachers’ daily teaching, whether teachers’ professional development will be in a single mode, how to teach students appropriately, and how to carry out classroom learning research in daily school life. They explored a heated discussion and exchanged viewpoints. All participated students expressed that Dr. Ko’s seminar is significantly meaning! It opens the door to let them understand how to make teachers’ professional developments research in practice.
