6th Education Forum: Prof. Li Chen from Shenzhen University sharing an excellent talk on school-based curriculum construction

On February 25, Prof. Li Chen, from Shenzhen University Teachers College, visited Faculty of Education, City University of Macau. As the sixth guest speaker of Education Forum, Prof. Li brought a brilliant lecture titled School-Based Curriculum: Logic and Practice. Prof. Guo Xiaoming, coming from Macao Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, President He Cheng and his teachers, from Kao Yip Middle School, Dr. Li Shuying, Academic Registrar of City University of Macau as well as Dean of FED, and many graduate students joined the lecture.

Starting with real education cases in Shenzhen, Prof. Li explained the multiple dimensions of curriculum and mainly discussed the installation and integration of three-dimension curriculum, respectively at national, local and school levels. Taking the actual example of the curriculum development in mainland primary and secondary schools, Prof. Li vividly illustrated the logical exploration and practical paths of school-based curriculum construction. Within this top-level academic lecture, Prof. Li concentrated the theoretical essence and practical way of school-based curriculum research, only in two hours.

At the ending of the lecture, Programme Coordinator Dr. Shao invited Prof. Guo Xiaoming, President He Cheng, Registrar Li Shuying, and Prof. Li Chenzhi to constitute a key panel on Curriculum Reform and Development, to discuss curriculum construction and its challenges in Macau and mainland China. Prof. Guo Xiaoming pointed out that due to the diversity caused by governmental management on school curriculum, the school-based curriculum construction is full of autonomy in Macau schools. Therefore, Macau is a real place where needs educators; Based on the comparison between the mainland and Macau curriculum management system, President He Cheng indicated that the advantage of Macau curriculum management lies in adequate autonomy, while the “appropriateness” in the process of adapting to local culture as well as school culture is extremely important. Registrar Li Shuying shared his opinions on the characteristics and significance on higher education curriculum construction, and also suggested that the creative ability to improve curriculum construction is vital in higher education.

In the final Q&A session, teachers from Kao Yip Middle School and our graduate students explored a heated discussion with the panel experts, on the topics including curriculum internationalization and localization, the development of future education, discipline construction and curriculum construction, etc. Participating teachers and students all put forward positive comments on this panel forum. They all shared that this especially unique, intensive, multi-perspective forum provided lots of insightful points for their future work, learning, and research!
