On September 14th, 2018, Prof. Yuchung Liu, Professor of the Department of Education at National Pingtung University, Dean of Office of International Affairs and Southeast Asia Development Center, was invited to be the guest speaker of CityU Education Forum. Prof. Liu mainly shared his experience about narrative inquiry so as to apply it to education.

Firstly, Prof. Liu played a short video to introduce the theme: Nowadays, the teaching method of learner-centered has been risen gradually and the teacher should play the role of the guide who provide learning experience for students. He also told a brief introduction about narrative inquiry to students. In recent years, from the humanities research to the social science research, narrative inquiry has become the basis of epistemology and methodology on qualitative research. Secondly, it is difficult to avoid the standardization of pedagogy. In the clamorous society, the intellectual hegemony and the collective consensus will hinder the process of pedagogy. Last but not least, Prof. Liu emphasized that narrative inquiry provides some individual and collective experience for researchers, thus it opened the new path which is the reconstruction of experience and subjectivity about narrative pedagogy.

After the speech, Prof. Sean Li, Academic Registrar and Dean of School of Education at City University of Macau, believed the essence of narrative inquiry actually backs to the idea of people. Finally, postgraduates from the School of Education raised their doubts to Prof. Liu, and he answered all their questions in detail. The atmosphere of this lecture was very active, all the participants benefited from Prof. Liu’s presentation. Prof. Liu stressed repeatedly that the core spirit of narrative inquiry is not only a phenomenal description but also a learning approach to make people better.
