CityU Education Forum 18: Prof. Huiling Pan from Tamkang University Presents on Teacher Professional Learning in CityU

Prof. Huiling Pan, Dean of Teaching and Learning Centre, Professor of Education Policy and leadership Institute of Tamkang University, was invited to deliver a presentation on “ Teacher Professional Learning - Taiwan Experience” on May 31. Prof. Pan entitled “Leadership for Learning in Taiwan: School-Based Management, Teacher Empowerment, Choice and Voice and Teaching for Understanding.”, and discussed about her experience to all participants.

 

Prof. Pan has firstly introduced the development background of teaching reform in Taiwan by listing the policies related to teaching and learning. Then, she has elaborated the concept of “ PLC” , shorten for “ Professional Learning Community” by analyzing its importance on teachers’ professional development and their future career from the aspects of “ the New Role”, “Professionalism” and “ Leadership”. She also thought that the Teacher Evaluation for Professional Development would be able to enable our teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of the concept of university teaching quality, which is connected to improve students’ learning outcomes and enhance teaching standards. Prof. Pan used her working experience as example to explain how to encourage teachers becoming open-minded on giving speech in front of public. If teachers can cope with the issues between researching and teaching, making public courses becomes a way of doing better in teaching instead of being a competition only existed in community of teachers.

 

Prof. Pan is highly welcomed by all the participants. After the speech, postgraduates from the Faculty of Education raised their doubts to Prof. Pan, such as the origin of teachers’ leadership and the future development of teachers’ professional evaluation. Prof. Pan answered all their questions in detail. The atmosphere of this lecture was very active, all the participants benefited from Prof. Pan’s presentation.
