CityU Education Forum 11: The Humanity Dimension of Modern Education: A profound speech delivered by Professor Xiaozhong LU from South China Normal University

On September 8th 2017, Professor Xiaozhong LU, the Dean of School of Education of South China Normal University, as well as Cheung Kong Scholars Chair Professor, was invited to the City University of Macau Education Forum for delivering a memorable speech, The Humanity Dimension of Modern Education, as the 11th guest speaker. Dr.Sean Li, Academic Registrar of City University of Macau as well as the Dean of Faculty of Education, many teachers and also students participated in the forum together.

 

First of all, Professor Lu introduced the concept of modern education, and stated that China is making great efforts to transform and innovate the education system from late and extrinsic modernization to endogenous modernization. Then Professor Lu showed current education system is lack of humanities through the report published by UNESCO, and explained the definition of humanity. He thinks that education should use humanity as the core. Afterwards, Professor Lu pointed out the reasons why higher and basic education field are lack of humanities, and concluded that the root cause of humanity deficiency is the divergence in the design of education system. He thinks the design should incline to rights and humanities, so people will understand what they are able to do under the education system, and finally achieve people-oriented policy. At the same time, if China can implement evaluation mechanism and teaching and research mutual promotion mechanism simultaneously, China’s education system will face a period of rapid development.

 

In the final Q&A section, Professor Lu discussed with students on the educations issues such as Double World-classes, the defect in university system and the pressure of young teachers. The Dean of School of Education, Professor Li also made a summary for students after the discussion, and indicates that students should be curious and not always rigid. Finally, Professor Lu said that Macau is close to Guangzhou, so there are many opportunities for making deep communications on various academic topic, and brings more exciting speech to students in the near future.
