On November 29, 2018, it was a great honor to invite Dr. Ru-Jer Wang, the President of National Taichung University of Education to attend the CityU Education Forum at the School of Education of the City University of Macau! The topic of this presentation was concerned with internationalization of universities and focused on Asia in general and Taiwan in specific. This presentation was made of five sections and Dr. Wang emphasized that he would share his ideas more from the perspective of students.
First of all, Dr. Wang took Taiwan as an example to describe the background of internationalization of universities. He showed that recently the number of mobile students had increased substantially on basis of the data, currently reaching over four million a year, but the fact was these people represented less than two percent of enrollment worldwide. Secondly, Dr. Wang made an explanation of two streams of internationalization of universities – internationalization at home and abroad. Then, he overviewed internationalization of universities in Asia, which included student mobility, faculty exchange, and internationalization ranking. Next, Dr. Wang described two strategies of internationalization of universities and provide the experience from National Taichung University of Education as a president. Finally, Dr. Wang made three conclusions based on the above, firstly, internationalization at home was more important, secondly, it was increasingly significant that university graduates had global skills in the workplace, thirdly, internationalized teaching and the researches about internationalization of universities were essential.
In the question-and-answer session, the audience enthusiastically asked questions. For example, a question was how Chinese students adapted to study abroad. Dr. Wang explained that it definitely had culture clashes, but we need learn to understand from the relative perspective. After the presentation, all the audience benefited a lot.
