First Greater Bay Area Gifted Education Forum Held at City University of Macau, Promoting New Developments in Gifted Education Across the Region

The First Greater Bay Area Gifted Education Forum was successfully held on January 18, 2025, at the Taipa Campus of the City University of Macau. The event attracted nearly thirty education experts, scholars, and practitioners from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. Co-organized by the School of Education of the City University of Macau and the Macau Gifted Education Association, the forum was supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau and co-hosted by the Macau Special Education Study Association. Upper House Education served as the event organizer. The forum aimed to foster exchanges and cooperation in gifted education and special education among the three regions, sharing practical experiences and the latest research findings.

At the opening of the forum, Dr. Kim Cho Ng, Dissertation Supervisor at the School of Education of the City University of Macau and Chairman of the Macau Special Education Study Association, extended a warm welcome to the guests and participants. He emphasized that the forum not only served as a platform for knowledge sharing but also provided an important opportunity for collaboration among educational communities across the regions.


The forum featured presentations by three distinguished speakers: Dr. Kim Cho Ng, Mr. Ting Pong Yeung (Ronnie Yeung), Chairman of the Hong Kong Gifted Education Teachers' Association, and Associate Professor Shi Mengliang from South China Normal University. They provided insights into the current state of gifted education in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau.


Dr. Kim Cho Ng delivered a speech titled "The Current State of Special Education and Gifted Education in Macau," offering an in-depth analysis of the development of special education and gifted education in Macau. He also shared perspectives on future directions, highlighting the growing demand for gifted education as society places increasing emphasis on education, which poses new challenges for policy-making.

Mr. Ting Pong Yeung presented a keynote speech titled "Learning from Hong Kong's Gifted Education Development and Advancement." He shared successful experiences from Hong Kong's gifted education system and discussed how to effectively implement school-based gifted education programs. He pointed out that the characteristics and learning patterns of gifted students differ significantly from those of regular students, necessitating adjustments in teaching methods to enhance educational effectiveness.

Associate Professor Shi Mengliang delivered a keynote speech titled "The History, Current Status, and Challenges of Gifted Education in Mainland China." He provided a detailed overview of the historical origins and development of gifted education in mainland China, analyzed current challenges, and emphasized the importance of promoting the sustainable development of gifted education in the context of globalization.

During the forum, participants actively engaged in discussions and offered valuable suggestions. There was a consensus that future efforts should focus on strengthening exchanges in gifted education to improve educational quality and advance educational equity. The successful hosting of this forum marked a new beginning for collaboration in gifted education among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. Participants expressed hope for more similar events in the future to further drive innovation and development in the field of education.

The distinguished guests attending the forum also included representatives from the Education and Youth Development Bureau; Mr. U Tak Hong, Chairman of the Macau Gifted Education Association; Ms. Hio Cheng Loi, Vice Chairman of the Macau Gifted Education Association; Ms. Pui Si Tam, Executive Director of Upper House Education (Macau) Limited; and Mr. Mao Lam Wong, Chairman of the Macau Special Education Study Association.
