Dr. Hong Yanbi from Southeast University Elaborated the Application of Quantitative Analysis in Education Studies

Dr. Hong Yanbi, Associated Professor as well as Programme Coordinator, from Sociology Department, School of Humanities, Southeast University, was invited to visit Faculty of Education, City University of Macau, and delivered a three-day research methodology workshop, Application of Quantitative Analysis in Education Studies.

During the three-day workshop, Dr. Hong used the data of China Education Panel Study (CEPS) and illustrated the application of quantitative analysis methods in education studies, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Not only sharing the distinction of different specific statistical methods, such as how to carry out data processing, variable classification, sample selection, sampling distribution, hypothesis test, correlation analysis, but also well explained the basic statistical principles of different statistical methods. In the daily classroom practice session, Dr. Hong also answered specific problems students encountered in the operation process in patience. In addition, because of the education background of Sociology of Education, Dr. Hong’s teaching style appears to be humorous but insightful, especially when illustrating relevant cases.

This research methodology workshop was originated from students’ quantitative analysis learning needs in their thesis writing process. Students joined the three-day workshop all said that they really learned a lot from both the statistical principles of data analysis and the practical operation of the SPSS statistical software. In addition, the FED research methodology workshop attracted many master and doctoral students from the Faculty of International Tourism and Management, as well as teachers and students from Faculty of Business as well as Faculty of Urban Management and Studies. Participants from different Faculties all expressed they gained a lot from this research methodology workshop.
