A forum themed “Challenges and Opportunities for Macao’s Education in the Era of Low Fertility” was held yesterday at the Golden Dragon Campus of City University of Macau. Co-organized by the Graduate School, Faculty of Education, and International Training and Testing Centre of CityU Macau, the event was presided over by Vice President Ye Guiping. Participating scholars jointly discussed the far-reaching impacts of demographic structural changes on Macao’s educational ecosystem and corresponding coping strategies.
Vice President Ye Guiping pointed out that the wave of low fertility is impacting local schools in Macao with unprecedented intensity, especially in early childhood and basic education. Difficult school operations, unstable teaching staff turnover and blurred school characteristics have become pressing challenges. Nevertheless, crises bring opportunities, and this marks a critical window for Macao’s education to shift toward connotative, quality-driven development.
Participants generally agreed that the four enhancement measures to be launched by the Macao SAR Government in the 2026/2027 academic year will provide important policy guidance and resource support for schools to tackle the challenges brought by low fertility.
